I love when new Nashville spots open up that pay homage to the history of Nashville – and the Alligator Bar does just that!
The alligator bar just opened this past weekend, so of course I had to go see what it’s all about. The quirky and exciting new bar is located beneath the historic train tracks near Union Station, Nashville.
With a fascinating history, unique location, and plenty of personality, the Alligator Bar is quickly becoming one of the most interesting new places to grab a drink in Nashville.
If you’re looking for somewhere a little different than Broadway honky-tonks, this hidden gem might be your next favorite stop. Perfect for quick small bites and a little after-work drink, pre-night out drink, or nightcap!

The History Behind the Alligator Bar
One of the coolest parts about the Alligator Bar is that its name isn’t just random — it’s actually rooted in Nashville history. And like I said, I love a good nod to Nashville history when it comes to the design of new restaurants, bars, and other attractions.
The space sits near the rail lines beside Union Station, and decades ago, the area supposedly housed live alligators that were kept as part of a roadside attraction connected to the railway tourism era. Travelers passing through Nashville would stop to see the unusual animals, turning the area into a quirky little landmark. I had no clue about this little part of Nashville history until this bar opened up!
Today, they’ve turned this area into a cool, hidden bar that fits perfectly in Nashville by being your not-so-typical bar. Nashville has plenty of bars – so I always love a good twist!
Where the Alligator Bar Is Located
The Alligator Bar sits tucked beneath the train bridge near Union Station, making it feel almost like a secret hideaway in the middle of downtown Nashville. I kinda feel like it’s if you had a speakeasy… but in the open air. The way it’s so open yet hidden beneath the bridge all at once is definitely a vibe!
It’s just steps away from:
- Union Station Nashville
- Nashville Yards
- Broadway nightlife
Because of its location, it’s an easy stop if you’re exploring downtown but want a more laid-back and unique atmosphere than the typical Broadway bar scene.
Since it’s a super relaxed atmosphere with very quick food, it’s a perfect pre-dinner stop if you just need a drink and/or an appetizer. I’d suggest going here before heading to one of the restaurants in the area – there are tons of great ones!
What Makes the Alligator Bar Unique
While Nashville has plenty of bars, the Alligator Bar stands out for a few reasons:
1. A Historic Story
In Nashville, it seems like a new bar is opening every single day. With every celebrity having their own bar, sometimes I think it can be hard for a new bar to stand out. That’s why I LOVE that the Alligator Bar really tapped into history and created a unique vibe you can’t really find anywhere else in Nashville.
2. A Hidden Location
Being tucked beneath a bridge and beside train tracks gives the bar a cool speakeasy-style vibe that makes discovering it feel like finding a secret. I never thought you’d be able to call a massive open-air bar a bar with a speakeasy vibe – but The Alligator Bar pulled it off.
3. Unique Branding
From the name to the decor, the bar embraces its quirky alligator theme without feeling gimmicky. I think they played into it just the perfect amount.
4. A Break From Broadway
If you want a drink downtown without the crowded honky-tonk energy, the Alligator Bar offers a more relaxed and stylish alternative. It feels more upscale than a lot of the Broadway bars while also being super laid back.
5. Pickle Ball Courts!
If you like playing Pickle Ball, they have courts. Feel free to bring your own equipment, or they also have some available to use as well!
Tips for Visiting the Alligator Bar
If you’re planning to check out the Alligator Bar, here are a few tips to make the most of your visit:
Go early if you want photos.
Because the space is visually interesting and fairly new, it’s quickly becoming a popular photo spot.
Pair it with other Nashville Yards stops.
The bar is close to several restaurants and entertainment venues in the growing Nashville Yards area, and I think this venture out is best paired with at least one more stop.
Add it to a downtown bar crawl.
It’s a fun stop before or after Broadway if you want something a little different.
Parking.
There is a parking lot out back. It’s a little expensive so if you want to walk or uber down I’d highly recommend doing that instead!
Is the Alligator Bar Worth Visiting?
If you love exploring unique bars with local stories behind them, the Alligator Bar is absolutely worth adding to your Nashville list.
Between its historic inspiration, hidden location, and cool atmosphere, it’s one of those places that reminds you why Nashville’s nightlife scene is always evolving.
Whether you’re visiting Nashville for the first time or you’re a local looking for somewhere new, the Alligator Bar is a fun spot to grab a drink and experience another quirky chapter of the city’s history.
Overall, I had a great time! The staff was wonderful, the drinks were good, and the spinach and artichoke dip appetizer I had was good too!
✅ Local tip: Since you’re already near Union Station, it’s also a great time to explore the beautiful lobby of The Union Station Nashville Yards, Autograph Collection — one of the most stunning historic buildings in Nashville.
